Q: Why was Washseat® invented?
A: Developed by award-winning inventor and entrepreneur Andy Speechley from Halifax, the inspiration for the invention of Washseat came about following a visit to a distressed friend. Andy’s friend was recovering from a severe stroke and was struggling to clean himself properly after using the toilet. He expressed his embarrassment and discomfort at having to rely on carers for his personal hygiene care. This sparked a lightbulb moment for Andy. He wanted to do something practical to help his friend and to make his life easier. Speaking as a Spark finalist in 2019 Andy said:
“My ambition is to help everyone who struggles with personal hygiene in the bathroom to be able to clean themselves without having to rely on other people.”
Q: How does it work?
A: Washseat is a raised toilet seat with a washing facility, enabling the user to manage their own hygiene. It safely delivers a gentle, but effective warm water bidet wash, whilst the user is still sitting on the toilet. Washseat fits easily to any toilet in seconds and it’s completely portable. There’s no need for external wiring or plumbing and it doesn’t require electricity to function. The hose is easy to attach and detach, while the handle allows for hand control and positioning. Washseat also has a temperature gauge with different indicators.
Q: Who is Washseat® for?
A: Safe, simple and easy to use, Washseat helps people to rediscover their independence. Making the task of going to the toilet easier and more comfortable, Washseat offers a gentle and sensitive approach. Proving to be an invaluable asset in care homes, social care facilities and private homes across the country, it enables people to manage their own personal hygiene. Washseat is ideal for people with a range of mobility and health issues. Including those with degenerative brain diseases and long-term health conditions which restrict their physical movements, balance and coordination. Providing dignity to anyone who struggles to sit on the toilet safely and who cannot clean themselves without assistance, Washseat is also ideal for the elderly. Particularly those with thinning skin that’s susceptible to tears, bruises, or breaks.
