NACAS: Care Worker Membership for Everyone

NACAS for care workers

The National Association of Care and Support Workers (NACAS) has positioned itself as a private, professional body for care workers. As such the social care sector recognises NACAS as a vehicle to unite the care workforce.

Modern-day care work is crucial, ensuring that an ageing population can receive support and ongoing care. It is this care that enables our elderly to stay at home or to receive professional care and support in a residential or care home setting.

Unlike nurses and other healthcare professionals, until recently, care workers have not had a formal membership body. Moreover, they have previously been underrepresented without a national voice or the professional recognition they deserve.

If you work in care, NACAS are here for you

Formed in 2016 by founder and chairman, Paul Featherstone, NACAS is the only professional body for care and support workers in the UK.

Everyone who works as a carer or support worker is eligible to join NACAS. Unpaid care workers are welcome to join for free and supporters and students can join as well. If you’re an employer, you can even become a corporate sponsor.

Q: Why was NACAS established?

A: Founded by Paul Featherstone in 2016, Paul is a qualified engineer and former retail management professional. Subsequently discovering social care work later in life, firstly as a support worker in a residential setting, before moving on to domiciliary care work. Paul is passionate about care workers. He wanted to support them and recognise the work they do. Arguably, modern daycare work has developed from traditional home help. As we would view it today, this was the previous model for providing support to those people living alone or considered vulnerable. Unlike nursing, there is no definitive date or a moment in time that specifically establishes care working as a job or vocation, let alone as a career.

Q: What do NACAS do?

A: NACAS places focus on advancing and promoting care work as a profession. They pledge to provide developmental support, advocacy and a common voice. For all care and support workers who commit to their membership, NACAS develop and promote excellence. They firmly believe in encouraging the uptake of knowledge, skills, conduct and best practice.

Q: Who can join?

A: All paid care workers, unpaid carers, care managers or directors, or those who are undertaking a registered managers qualification can join NACAS. Similarly, you can join as an affiliate if you’re a student, work in a care associated role or if you want to support NACAS in another way. Employers are an important part of NACAS membership too.  If you would like to discuss how membership can benefit your organisation, contact NACAS directly to learn more.

Q: What are the benefits of becoming a member?

A: NACAS offer you the opportunity to become part of an organised group. They provide membership options for paid and unpaid care workers, managers, employers, students and supporters. You’ll enjoy a range of benefits with your membership and be able to show others that you’re a care professional.

There are five main pillars for their activities. These are:

  1. Professionalise: making care a recognised and respected profession alongside other health professions.
  2. Advocacy: being the voice of the care profession, standing up on issues and being vocal in government.
  3. Promote Care: the promotion of care as a career and as a profession. NACAS are the leading voice for the profession.
  4. Training: NACAS provide core skills training and professional development opportunities to every member.
  5. Care Network: building a community of care professionals is at the heart of their membership and objectives.

Q: How can I join and become involved?

A: NACAS are looking for people with great local connections to become regional ambassadors across the UK. In addition, you can also support membership onboarding and help to answer questions and develop NACAS processes in this important role.
